NEW BROTHERS IN 1993

The fraternity pledged seven prospective members in the spring of 1993. They include Marcus Jaskolka, Thomas Keenan, Patrick Kimbrell, Tony Kirby, Konstantin Maltsev, Gang Qu, and Derek Young. This year's pledge program was excellent and all seven were inducted in an impressive ceremony on March 7, 1993. The three-week program emphasized building relationships and brotherhood. Both brothers and Greeks were involved the traditional walk to Henry and lunch at Shoney's in Paris.

BRIAN WALLACE IS SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENT

We continued striving toward the brotherhood ideals of superior character, leadership, and scholarship by awarding our endowed "Laddie H. Lollar Scholarship." This scholarship, awarded each year to a fraternity brother, was established in 1989 and named after our advisor who has served the fraternity for 29 of his 32 years at Bethel College. We were proud to award a $200 scholarship for the 1992-1993 year to Brian Wallace. Michael Leslie was named an honorary recipient for his efforts in the fraternity and in the development of the endowment.

Twenty-two-year-old Brian Glynn Wallace is in his third year as a brother of Phi Delta Sigma. The recipient of ACT, Cumberland Presbyterian, and honor scholarships, Brian studies in the areas of biology, chemistry, and psychology. During the past year, Brian served as secretary of affairs and chairman of the Constitutional Board of Review for the Student Government Association. Other affiliations include three-year memberships in both the Natural Science Society and the Psychology Club, in which he held the office of treasurer. He will serve the Psychology Club as vice-president and the fraternity as president in the upcoming academic year.

Among Brian's hobbies are karate, hunting, fishing, water skiing, and horseback riding. An amateur guitar player, Brian also enjoys listening to music and reading. Brian's plans for the future lie in the field of holistic medicine.

The fraternity would like to thank recent contributors to the scholarship fund who include the Dr. John Gam, Dr. Laddie Lollar, Ken McCoy, and the Greenfield (Missouri) Cumberland Presbyterian Church.

BROTHER STUDIES FRAT FOR HONORS PROJECT

Michael Leslie completed a 125-page study concerning group dynamics, interpersonal relations, and ideological changes among the members of Phi Delta Sigma Fraternity over the past three decades. The study included a brief history of the organization, a review of the literature, a questionnaire, and the findings.

One issue which the project explored was the importance of masculine identity and intimacy. Robert Bly points out that ". . . Men have lived together in heart and soul connections for hundreds of thousands of years . . . Having no soul union with other men can be the most damaging wound of all."

While the term "close" may have been interpreted differently, depending upon capacity for intimacy, 74 percent of all respondents reported having three or more close male friends. The results of the study also found that of the eighty total respondents, 84 percent attend religious services at least once a week. Fifty-four percent of the total felt that the fraternity had a positive influence on their cultural, emotional, intellectual, and social development. Several of those who responded in a positive manner noted the importance of validation from others.

SPOTLIGHT ON DAVIS

Adam Davis is a man who has spent much time and effort developing his abilities while at Bethel these past four years. He has been involved in varsity golf, the Gamma Beta Phi Honor Society, and Phi Delta Sigma Fraternity. Adam served as president of both latter groups during 1992-93.

Adam observes, "Becoming a Christian was the most important decision I have ever made. I have been a different person since. I have meaning and direction in my life now and I know I am here to help my fellow man. Becoming a medical doctor is the best way I feel I can be of service to people. In college I have developed many true friendships with people of similar faith. These friends have caused me to learn a great deal. They have also caused me to grow intellectually, spiritually, morally, and ethically. Now I can examine the world in which I live as well as myself.

"Golf has been an integral part of my life since early childhood. I began playing when I was four years of age. My father introduced me to the game and I have loved it ever since.

I love being outdoors, being on my own, and being the one to determine how well I do. I even love to practice! One of the most important things I have learned from playing golf is temperament. Golf has provided much insight for me over the years in terms of dealing with adversity, dealing with people, perseverance and discipline."

Adam was the NAIA district 24 Medalist in Golf. He went with the Wildcat team to the NAIA National Golf Championship at the Sawgrass Valley Golf Course in Florida. Adam was among the top thirty NAIA golfers in the nation to make the cut.

Adam graduated in the top ten academically and was named to Who's Who Among Students in American Colleges and Universities. He received the Roy N. Baker Athletic-Academic Award and the Outstanding Senior Biology Award. He completed a senior honors project on the concentration of lead in standing waters.

CONTINUED EXCELLENCE

Phi Delta Sigma was runner-up in the fraternity highest grade point average competition following a win in this category last year. Phi Delt was also the runner-up for the Student Government Association's Most Outstanding Organization Award receiving a $50.00 prize.

The fraternity and sorority entered a three-layered cake in the float division of the sesquicentennial homecoming parade. The entry took first in both the float division and the best overall entry.

INTRAMURAL GAMES

The fraternity came out well in intramurals being crowned intramural football champions. We like to think that we are carrying on the fraternity tradition of sports excellence. Gang Qu won the singles intramural table tennis tournament with Adam Davis placing second. They were also winners as partners in the doubles intramural table tennis tournament. The sisters of Lambda Sigma won the volleyball intramurals.

SPRING SOCIAL 1993

On March 20th, 1993, Phi Delta Sigma and Lambda Sigma held their annual Spring Social at the Garden Plaza in Jackson. The event included good food, music, awards, and games. Lambda Sigma sister Dana Griffith of Nashville, Tennessee, was honored as fraternity sweetheart.

The fraternity presented the customary annual awards to its members. The honorees in order of the presentations were the following: best dressed (tie), Adam Davis and Donny Sparkman; wittiest, Gang Qu; most athletic, Chad Malray; most spirited, Adam Davis; most friendly, Konstantin Maltsev; most studious, Michael Leslie; best all-around, Brian Wallace; and most outstanding pledge, Tony Kirby.

The sorority honored Derek Young as Mr. Phi Delta Sigma. Lambda Sigma announced officers for the upcoming year: president, Jennifer Molt; vice-president, Shannon Martin; secretary & historian, Michelle Martin; treasurer, Terri Wiley; chaplain, Keisha Carter; pledge mistress, April Kendrick; SGA representative, Susie Futrell.

OTHER ACTIVITIES

Bowling nights were enjoyed in Paris and Lexington. The fraternity and sorority enjoyed a delightful meal at the home of President and Mrs. Elkins.

Everyone enjoyed the beginning and renewing of friendships at the homecoming reunion. The annual Christmas party with Lambda Sigma sisters was held at the end of fall semester 1992. The brothers and sisters exchanged gifts and enjoyed refreshments. A year-end closing service and time of sharing was led by Cordell Smith in the chapel.

COMMUNITY SERVICE

Phi Delta Sigma and Lambda Sigma continued the joint highway clean-up project. The two organizations cleaned the shoulder and ditches of a two-mile section of Highway 22 between McKenzie and Gleason several times during the year.

The fraternity sponsored a lock-in for young boys and girls in the gymnasium. There were plenty of games, food, and fun.

Phi Delta Sigma was the recipient of the "Big Drop" award given by the American Red Cross. The award is given to honor the student organization which gives the most blood during the year.
